Sant Narcís, the Saint Patron of Girona

As you might already know, whenever the end of October approaches, the city of Girona prepares to celebrate its beloved patron saint, Sant Narcís. The legend of Sant Narcís is a tale of bravery and divine intervention that has become part of the city's identity. According to tradition, Sant Narcís was a bishop in the early Christian era. His most famous story recounts a time when Girona faced a dire threat from a French invading army.

The city was under siege, and the people were filled with fear. In their moment of need, they turned to Sant Narcís, praying for deliverance from their enemies. In response to their fervent prayers, a swarm of flies descended upon the invading forces, creating chaos and confusion. The flies swarmed the French soldiers, driving them away and allowing the people of Girona to reclaim their city. This extraordinary event not only saved Girona but also solidified Sant Narcís's status as a protector and a symbol of hope for the entire city.

The story of Sant Narcís is more than just a legend; it embodies the spirit of resilience and unity that defines the people of Girona. It is not uncommon to see posters and graffiti featuring flies (somewhat romanticized) across the city, or stands selling jewelry that also features this insect. You can even see flies as an impromptu mascot for several businesses, Girona Futbol Club included! As the city prepares for the Fires de Sant Narcís, which this year take place from October 25th to November 3rd (with Sant Narcís's feast day on the 29th), the legacy of Sant Narcís comes to life in a vibrant celebration of culture and tradition.

As the festivities continue, the spirit of Sant Narcís is felt throughout the city, inspiring both locals and visitors alike. In this way, the story of Sant Narcís continues to resonate, ensuring that his legacy remains alive in the hearts of the people of Girona for generations to come.
